WE'RE HERE IN ISTANBUL!!!

 Oh the joys of travel!!  

We left Atlanta an hour late, but had a "Jet Jockey" for our pilot and he made up most of that time and arrived only 30 minutes behind schedule in Frankfurt.  I'd forgotten about that airport and all the stairs (NO ESCALATORS) and the remote parking of planes and buses to get you for one terminal to another.  Robbi was a trooper and her knees held up!  Needless to say we did make our connecting flight to Istanbul!! Tight but we do have luggage...!

Viking reps were at the airport to meet us. They were very professional and really nice to have that "helping hand" to get us to the transport to our hotel, a 45-minute ride, that was very scenic and picturesque.

We're checked in at the CONRAD Istanbul Bosphorus, high on a hill overlooking the Bosphorus and the central city.  Our Viking rep gave us a 10-minute briefing of our itinerary for the next several days that we're here.

    Easier to delete and retype than try to figure out modifying. Glad both you and your luggage made it and really looking forward to following along. What a fantastic view!

 We docked last night in Edfu.  We have a fairly light day today with only one temple this morning, but a temple magnificently preserved! Edfu is one of Egypt’s most complete ancient temples, buried 9 meters below street level, and preserved under  desert sands for 2,000 years.  From our ship,our motor coach took us for a scenic drive through the village streets,  catching glimpses of local life. ESNA -- Village Tour

We explored Esna, once an important center for trade and later a regional capital under  the Greeks and Romans. Today, Esna is a quiet farming town with a lively market scene. A short walk from your pier  into town.  Along the waterfront, there are several examples of 19th-century houses with elaborate mashrabiya, or elaborate  wooden lattice screens.  We walked past the 14th-century Emari minaret, one of Egypt’s oldest, and viewed the remains of the  ancient temple dedicated to the god Khnum. Built in Greco-Roman times by the Ptolemies on the site of an older temple, its  hypostyle hall is the only building that has been excavated—the rest remains underneath the surrounding modern city. Egyptian Spice Market -- Istanbul

  After the Topkapi Palace tour, part of the afternoon was spent touring the Spice Market, where we experienced the Old City's covered Spice Bazaar.  This has been the center of the spice trade since the 17th century.  The sounds and smells were incredible and the photos below won't due it justice!
